What do I do if my e-file is rejected?

If the rejection is due to information that the IRS has on file, you may need to file a paper return until you can fix the mistakes that are leading to a mismatch. Once you understand the error code, you can move forward onto fixing the problem and resubmitting the return.

When you’re unsuccessful at e-filing a return, the system is set up to generate a reject code so that you know exactly what information is missing or needs to be corrected. Just make the corrections, and you’ll be able to make a second attempt at e-filing.
