What is the employment bonus?
In workplace settings, a bonus is a type of compensation an employer gives to an employee that complements their base pay or salary. A company may use bonuses to reward achievements, to show gratitude to employees who meet longevity milestones, or to entice not-yet employees to join a company’s ranks.
How does annual bonus work?
An annual bonus is usually based on overall company performance. So you may get a large or small bonus (or no bonus at all) depending on how successful your organization or specific department was that year, as well as how big a part of that success you were. This can also be considered “profit sharing.”
Why do companies give bonuses instead of raises?
One of the main reasons employers use bonus plans rather than salary increases is that they do not feel pressured by the economy to increase salaries. Specifically, with fewer jobs being created, employers are not forced into increasing salaries to attract employees.
When do you get paid your annual bonus?

How to calculate bonuses for employees in HR?
To calculate the bonus to be paid for a graphic designer who earns $55,000 a year and a secretary who earns $30,000, you would multiply the bonus rate—let’s assume 3%—by their salary amounts. In this example, employees who are paid more in regular salary will receive a higher bonus.
Can a bonus be paid to an employee who resigns?
An employee who voluntarily leaves his employment before the bonus calculation date is not entitled to receive it if the employer has expressly qualified its promise of a bonus on a requirement of continued employment.
When does it make sense to delay a bonus?
There is an alternate bonus consideration, that of employee retention. In this case it makes sense to delay the payout until several months into the following year pending calculation, board approval etc, as this will allow the employee to get hooked into the following years bonus plan.
