A commonly accepted and encompassing definition of marriage is the following: a formal union and social and legal contract between two individuals that unites their lives legally, economically, and emotionally. Being married also gives legitimacy to sexual relations within the marriage.

Receiving wages, workers’ compensation, and retirement plan benefits for a deceased spouse. Taking bereavement leave if your spouse or one of your spouse’s close relatives dies.

Marriage begins to exist when a man and woman give their lawful consent, accepting each other as husband and wife. The marriage has gained a permanent character and stability. Marriage becomes a continuous event, a lifelong process in which the two attempt to fulfill God’s plan for them.
